Logic Gates and Combinational Circuits

A course package for the ET platform: a Logic Gates card, an Arithmetic & Code Conversion card, an RS Flip-Flops card and a D & JK Flip-Flops card for the study of digital circuits, all powered by the base system at safety extra-low voltage, with guided multimedia courseware.
Experiments
  • Investigation of the NOT function and the AND and NAND gates
  • Investigation of the OR and NOR gates
  • Investigation of XOR and XNOR (XNOR built from the XOR and NOT gates)
  • Half adders and full adders: from logic gates to the 4-bit full adder
  • Subtracting circuits: two's-complement subtraction with the adder / subtractor
  • Code conversion: BCD to 7-segment and binary to Gray code
  • Investigation of the RS-NOR flip-flop
  • Investigation of the clocked RS flip-flop
  • Static (level-controlled) and dynamic (edge-triggered) D flip-flops
  • JK flip-flops: set, reset, hold and toggle
  • JK master-slave flip-flop
  • Flip-flop applications: debouncing, data storage, toggling and frequency division
ET362 Logic Gates, Arithmetic and Code Conversion, RS Flip-Flops, and D and JK Flip-Flops experiment cards
Description
The platform teaches the fundamentals of digital circuits through guided, hands-on experiments. The Logic Gates Card carries the six basic gate types - AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR and XOR - each with its own input sockets and an output LED. The Arithmetic & Code Conversion Card carries a 4-bit full adder that, with an XOR stage on its B inputs and a mode input M, works as an adder or as a two's-complement subtractor, plus a BCD to 7-segment decoder with display and a binary to Gray code converter. The RS Flip-Flops Card carries an RS-NOR flip-flop built from cross-coupled NOR gates and a clocked RS flip-flop built from NAND gates. The D & JK Flip-Flops Card sets a static (level-controlled) D latch beside a dynamic (edge-triggered) D flip-flop, and a JK flip-flop beside a JK master-slave flip-flop. XNOR is built by following the XOR gate with the NOT gate. Every output has an LED and a measuring socket, so logic states can be read directly or acquired with the ET300 digital I/O. Inputs are set from the ET300 digital outputs or by patching to the +5 V and GND sockets. The supply comes from the ET300 base system.
Courseware
The interactive multimedia course combines theory with guided experiments: Boolean algebra and truth tables, universal gates, binary arithmetic with carry and two's complement, number codes (BCD, 7-segment and Gray code), RS, D and JK flip-flops - static and dynamic, edge-triggered and master-slave - with their timing diagrams and applications. Student answers are evaluated automatically, and the full course - at least 16 hours of directed instruction (4 hours per card) - includes self-assessment.
