ET355 · Pulse and Waveform Generators

Pulse and Waveform Generators

A course package for the ET platform: four experiment cards for the study of pulse and waveform generation - transistor multivibrators, threshold switches, square-wave, sawtooth and pulse generators, and RC and LC sine-wave oscillators - all powered by the base system at safety extra-low voltage, with guided multimedia courseware.
Experiments
  • Astable multivibrator: oscillation, period and duty cycle
  • Monostable multivibrator: triggering and pulse duration
  • Bistable multivibrator: set and reset by input pulses
  • Threshold switch: Schmitt trigger and hysteresis
  • Square-wave generator with an operational amplifier
  • Sawtooth generator: capacitor charging and discharge
  • Pulse generation with a programmable unijunction transistor (PUT)
  • Sine-wave generator with RC elements: phase-shift oscillator and the oscillation condition
  • Sine-wave generator with LC elements: Colpitts oscillator and resonant frequency
  • Measuring frequency and waveform with the ET300 oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer
ET355 Multivibrators, Bistable and Threshold Switch, Square-Wave and Sawtooth Generators, and Sine-Wave Generators experiment cards
Description
The platform teaches pulse and waveform generation through guided, hands-on experiments. The Astable & Monostable Multivibrators Card carries two transistor multivibrators with an LED in each collector, so their switching is visible as well as measurable; the astable runs at about 1 Hz and the monostable gives a pulse of about 0.7 s from a trigger input. The Bistable & Threshold Switch Card carries a transistor bistable with set and reset inputs and an operational-amplifier Schmitt trigger. The Square-Wave & Sawtooth Generators Card carries an operational-amplifier square-wave generator and a sawtooth generator with a programmable unijunction transistor (PUT) that also delivers a pulse output. The Sine-Wave Generators Card carries an RC phase-shift oscillator with adjustable gain and an LC Colpitts oscillator. The multivibrators run from +5 V, which keeps the transistors' base-emitter reverse voltage within its limit; the other circuits run from ±15 V. All supplies come from the ET300 base system.
Courseware
The interactive multimedia course combines theory with guided experiments: switching transistors, RC timing, positive feedback and hysteresis, relaxation oscillators, the oscillation condition, and RC and LC frequency-determining networks. Student answers are evaluated automatically, and the full course - at least 16 hours of directed instruction (4 hours per card) - includes self-assessment.
