Modulation and Power Conversion

A course package for the ET platform: an Amplitude Modulation card, a Frequency Modulation card, a Switched-Mode Conversion card and a Thyristor Switching card for the study of modulation, switched-mode power supplies and thyristor power switching, all powered by the base system at safety extra-low voltage, with guided multimedia courseware.
Experiments
  • Amplitude modulator: modulation depth and the AM spectrum
  • Double-sideband suppressed-carrier (balanced) modulation
  • Amplitude demodulator: envelope detection and the choice of time constant
  • Frequency modulator: voltage-controlled oscillator, frequency deviation and the FM spectrum
  • Frequency demodulation with a phase-locked loop
  • Switched-mode voltage regulator (buck): switching waveforms, output voltage setting and efficiency
  • DC converter (boost): output voltage against duty cycle
  • Comparing switched-mode and linear regulation
  • DC voltage switch using thyristors: switching on and forced commutation
  • Full-wave control with a zero-voltage switch
  • Measuring spectra and switching waveforms with the ET300 spectrum analyzer and oscilloscope
ET356 Amplitude Modulation, Frequency Modulation, Switched-Mode Conversion and Thyristor Switching experiment cards
Description
The platform teaches modulation and switched-mode power conversion through guided, hands-on experiments. The Amplitude Modulation Card carries an analog multiplier modulator - with a link that adds the carrier for standard AM or leaves it out for double-sideband suppressed-carrier modulation - and a diode envelope demodulator. The Frequency Modulation Card carries a voltage-controlled oscillator as the FM modulator and a phase-locked loop as the FM demodulator, whose loop-filter voltage recovers the audio signal. The Switched-Mode Conversion Card carries a buck regulator with an adjustable output from 1.2 to 13 V and a boost converter switched by a MOSFET from a PWM signal, with the switch node and output on sockets. The Thyristor Switching Card carries a DC voltage switch with two thyristors - ON fires the main thyristor, OFF fires the second and its commutation capacitor turns the main thyristor off - and a zero-voltage switch that fires a triac at every zero crossing of the AC supply while its enable input is high, for full-wave (burst) control of an AC load. Carrier, audio and PWM signals come from the ET300 function generator, and the supplies come from the ET300 base system.
Courseware
The interactive multimedia course combines theory with guided experiments: amplitude and frequency modulation in the time and frequency domains, modulation depth and deviation, envelope and PLL demodulation, the operating principle, duty cycle, ripple and efficiency of switched-mode converters, and thyristor switching with forced commutation and zero-voltage switching. Student answers are evaluated automatically, and the full course - at least 16 hours of directed instruction (4 hours per card) - includes self-assessment.
