TH322 · Heat Conduction & Convection

Experimental Apparatus for the study of heat conduction and convection

Laboratory experiments
  • Fourier's law - material dependence of heat conduction.
  • Effect of specimen length on heat dissipation.
  • Free convection - heat transfer in still air.
  • Forced convection - effect of airflow velocity on heat transfer.
  • Free vs. forced convection - comparative analysis.
  • Temperature distribution along the fin - visualising the thermal gradient.
  • Calculation of convective heat transfer coefficients.
TH322 - Heat conduction and convection bench
Overview

A metal bar is heated at one end and cooled along its length as a fin, either by natural convection or by forced convection with the help of six computer controlled fans.
