TH552 · Plate Exchanger

Plate Heat Exchanger Module for TH550

Experiments
  • Energy balance on both streams - heat duty from mass flow rate and temperature rise, hot side against cold side
  • Co-current and counter-current operation, obtained by swapping the two cold-side couplings, and comparison of the resulting temperature profiles
  • Determination of the overall heat transfer coefficient from the measured duty, the logarithmic mean temperature difference and the known transfer area
  • Effect of the chevron pattern - the overall heat transfer coefficient reached at Reynolds numbers where a plain tube would still be laminar
  • Direct comparison against TH551 and TH553: transfer coefficient and transfer area per unit volume, measured on the same base unit under the same conditions
  • Effectiveness–NTU analysis and operation at very small temperature differences between the streams

Description
A plate heat exchanger is a stack of thin metal plates pressed with a chevron pattern. Every second plate is rotated by 180°, so the chevrons of neighbouring plates cross and the stack forms two interleaved sets of narrow channels - hot medium in one set, cold medium in the other, with every plate a transfer surface wetted on both faces. The crossing chevrons do two things at once: they support the plates against pressure, and they trip the flow into turbulence at Reynolds numbers where a plain tube would still be laminar. Turbulence governs the film coefficient, so a plate pack reaches a far higher overall heat transfer coefficient than a tube of the same area, in a fraction of the volume. This module is a brazed pack - the plates are vacuum-brazed with copper rather than clamped between gaskets, which makes it compact and leak-free at the cost of not being openable for inspection.
