FM570 · Multi-Pump Test Apparatus

Experimental Apparatus for the Study of Pump Types and Pump Performance

Learning objectives / experiments
  • Study of how each pump type moves water and where it is used, such as:
    • Gear pump
    • Piston pump
    • Centrifugal pump
    • Axial rotodynamic pump
    • Vane pump
    • Lobe pump
    • Channel impeller pump
  • Connection of a pump into a hydraulic circuit with quick-release couplings
  • Measurement of the performance of a pump, such as:
    • Head
    • Flow rate
    • Torque
    • Shaft power
    • Efficiency
  • Determination, analysis and comparison of the characteristic curves of the seven pump types
  • Comparison of positive displacement and rotodynamic pumps under increasing delivery pressure
  • Determination of the effect of suction throttling on pump performance

Simplified diagram of the water circuit and its instruments

The Sangari eLearning platform controls the motor speed and reads the torque, the shaft speed, the pressures, the water temperature and the flow rate.

Technical specifications
    Operating environment laboratory; +5…40 °C; 30…95 % relative humidity, non-condensing
Power supply 230 V, 50 Hz, single phase
Pump types 7, positive displacement and rotodynamic, each on its own base plate
    Frame L 1075 × H 1750 × W 730 mm
Weight 149 kg without water in the tank
Drive inverter-controlled AC motor, cradled on a torque arm as an AC dynamometer, driving the pump under test
Torque and speed load cell for the torque, magnetic pickup for the speed
Pressure and flow transducers on the suction and delivery lines, built-in flow meter
Valves throttle valve on the suction side, throttle valve on the delivery side, vacuum breaker on the suction side, pressure relief valve on the delivery side
Couplings quick-release hose and drive couplings, tool-free
Data acquisition The Sangari eLearning platform gives real-time control and data acquisition, together with interactive teaching material. Students set the pump speed and read the suction and delivery pressures, the flow rate, the torque and the shaft speed. The platform then guides them through building the characteristic curve of each pump.
Main characteristics
  • modular design, so a pump changes over quickly and without tools
  • data acquisition system included
  • inverter-controlled AC motor
  • measurement of torque and speed
  • throttle valve on the suction side and throttle valve on the delivery side
  • vacuum breaker and pressure relief valve fitted
  • water tank, pipework, valves and dynamometer included
  • seven pump types, four positive displacement and three rotodynamic
  • turnkey and hydraulically self-contained, so a test needs only power and water
  • corrosion-resistant wetted parts, for clean water at laboratory temperature
