FM500 · Hydraulic Bench

Experimental Apparatus for the Study of Fluid Mechanics

A mobile, self-contained hydraulic bench that feeds a controlled flow of water to the fluid mechanics experiments and measures that flow two ways. Students read it on the digital display, then time the water rising in the stepped volumetric tank and compare the two results. The water recirculates through a 250 litre sump tank, so once filled the bench needs no mains water.
Description
The FM500 runs on four wheels, two of them with foot-operated locks. Its body forms a 250 litre sump tank with a submersible pump. A hand-operated valve sets the flow from the pump, and an electronic flow meter shows it on a digital display. The worktop holds one experiment at a time. A quick-release connector joins the experiment to the pump outlet without tools, a raised rim holds back spilled water, and an open channel in the worktop takes weirs and notches. Water from the experiment returns to a volumetric measuring tank above the sump. The tank has a large chamber for high flow rates and a small one for low flow rates, a stilling baffle that calms the incoming water and a sight tube with a scale. A dump valve empties it back into the sump. For very small flow rates students use the measuring cylinder and the stopwatch. The flow meter sends its readings to a PC over USB, where the data management software records them.
