CH561 · Corrosion Studies

Experimental apparatus for the study of materials corrosion

Experiments
  • Corrosion behaviour of different metals, interpreted through the electrode-potential series
  • Galvanic corrosion of dissimilar-metal couples (steel/copper, steel/zinc)
  • Influence of pH on the corrosion rate - tests at pH 4, 7 and 9
  • Influence of chloride (NaCl) concentration in the electrolyte
  • Oxygen corrosion - oxygenated versus deoxygenated (nitrogen-purged) media
  • Electrochemical corrosion driven by an applied voltage between metals
  • Cathodic protection by impressed current and by sacrificial anodes
  • Effectiveness of corrosion inhibitors (phosphates, silicates) on steel passivation
  • Stress corrosion - the influence of internal mechanical strain
  • Passivation of aluminium and stainless steel
CH561
Description
Corrosion is fundamentally an electrochemical process: in contact with an electrolyte, a metal forms anodic regions where it dissolves and cathodic regions where the released electrons are consumed. CH561 makes every factor that drives this anode-cathode cell - the metal, the pH, the salt content, dissolved oxygen, an applied voltage, stress or an inhibitor - visible and measurable. The corrosion rate is read both by direct observation and by weighing the specimens after a known exposure period.
