AM771 · Hybrid Drivetrains

Experimental Apparatus for the Study of Hybrid Drivetrains

AM771 is a complete hybrid drivetrain of a production car, mounted on a mobile frame. It is designed for the study of hybrid drivetrains and their components, including the petrol engine, electric motor-generators, automatic transmission, high-voltage battery, power electronics, and air conditioning system. The apparatus allows for hands-on learning and experimentation with hybrid vehicle technology.
Features
  • complete and functional petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain on a mobile frame
  • original components of the Toyota Hybrid System II (THS-II), wired as in the vehicle
  • operation in electric, engine, combined and regeneration mode
  • front panel with 4mm quick-connect measurement points on the drivetrain's sensor and actuator circuits
  • 62 switchable faults, set without tools
  • OBD-II diagnosis via 16-pin connector
  • original instrument cluster
  • drivetrain visible behind removable protective panels
Learning objectives / experiments
  • operating modes of a series-parallel hybrid drivetrain: electric, engine, combined, regeneration
  • investigation of the energy flow between traction battery, motor-generators and petrol engine
  • structure and behaviour of the high-voltage energy storage system
  • function of the Toyota E-CVT power-split transaxle
    • one planetary gearset and two motor-generators in place of gear steps
  • engine management on an Atkinson-cycle petrol engine
  • measurement of sensor and actuator signals at the front panel
  • fault-finding on 62 switchable faults
    • from the fault code to the circuit to the measurement
  • OBD-II diagnosis: reading and clearing of fault codes, live parameters, adaptations
  • function of the engine cooling circuit and of the automatic climate control circuit
